Innovation and Tech Policy

Researchers at the Duke ISP Lab study how policy institutions shape the scale, direction, speed, and public value of innovation. This research examines (i) the design of innovation policy “plumbing,” such as how R&D is financed and governed, (ii) targeted incentive and regulatory tools that aim to accelerate socially valuable technologies, and (iii) strategic interaction among governments when innovation generates global public goods. A common theme is connecting contemporary policy choices to longer-run innovation dynamics, up to understanding how institutional choices and geopolitics have shaped the performance of the national innovation ecosystem.
